Monday YA Author Interview With Ripley Patton

Displaying Ripley's author photo.jpgWhere are you from?
I was born and raised in a small town in Southern Illinois, but I have also lived in Indiana, Georgia, Chicago, Colorado, Haiti, New Zealand and Portland, Oregon.

When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing at the age of thirteen as a way of processing the grief of losing my mother to cancer.

What books have most influenced your life most?
Probably a book called Motherless Daughters by Hope Edelman, but also all the amazing fantasy and sci-fiction female greats such as Ursula LeGuin, Madeleine L'Engle, Juliet Marillier, Octavia Butler, Anne McCaffrey and Lois McMaster Bujold.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
Probably Juliet Marillier. I read her mythology/fantasy Seven Waters series when I was a teen. Then, a few years ago, I met her at a Con and sat on a panel with her, and she found my ideas and my writing interesting. I also got to be in an anthology with her where my story was the first in the book and hers was the last, like bookends. That was so awesome.

What book are you reading now?
I just finished Whisper by Phoebe Kitanidis. It is a YA paranormal and I really enjoyed it.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Mary Holland is an amazing unknown fantasy author. Her book The Bone Road is one of my favorite books of all time.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
I like so many authors, I could never pick just one. But what tends to strike me is honesty, humor, and a realistic bit of darkness. I don't like perfect characters or perfect endings, but there always needs to be a glimmer of hope.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Well, my first book took me three years to write, so probably just the huge amount of time expended. Mind you, I also moved overseas and back during that time and survived two major earthquakes in New Zealand. And the second book of my series only took me a little over six months. So, it does get easier.

Have you been an avid reader your entire life? (since you could read)
Yes. I would and did read almost anything I could get my hands on as a child, including encyclopedias and dictionaries.

What character in your books do you relate to most?
Olivia Black, my main character, for sure.  She is dealing with the loss of a parent, is an introvert, and is different than everyone else, but she is still a strong, smart, snarky, young woman.

What is your favorite sport to watch and or play?
I'm not a big sports fan, but growing up I enjoyed playing volleyball and watching football. Now, I don't watch sports at all, but I have a love for any reality show with a competitive element. So, I guess my favorite sport is reality:)

Favorite Movie?
Stranger then Fiction and ANYTHING by Hayao Miyazaki.

Chocolate or Vanilla?
Vanilla with chocolate sauce.

Puppy's or Kittens?
Both

Beach or Mountains?
Mountains

If you could be a color, what color would you be?

 Deep Red

Favorite Dessert?
Blueberry Pie or Root beer floats

If you could be a book character, what character would you be?
Probably Olivia Black. I think that's why I wrote her. Plus, who wouldn't want to have a ghost hand?

Book Review: Tarnish

Tarnish
Tarnish
Katherine Longshore

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Anne Boleyn is the odd girl out. Newly arrived to the court of King Henry VIII, everything about her seems wrong, from her clothes to her manners to her witty but sharp tongue. So when the dashing poet Thomas Wyatt offers to coach her on how to shine at court—and to convince the whole court they’re lovers—she accepts. Before long, Anne’s popularity has soared, and even the charismatic and irresistible king takes notice. More than popularity, Anne wants a voice—but she also wants love. What began as a game becomes high stakes as Anne finds herself forced to make an impossible choice between her heart’s desire and the chance to make history.

Review:

I liked Gilt by Katherine Longshore, so I decided to start Tarnish.
Before I talk about Tarnish, I will let you know that I am extremely picky about my Historical Fiction, more than any other genre.

Plot:
The plot went really slow. Within the 448 pages of this book, not much actually happened. I found myself wanting to skim the pages at many times. (I didn't). Remembering that Gilt also went pretty slow, and I still enjoyed it I continued this one.
Most of this was also very dramatic. And not necessarily in a good way.
I can't say that the plot was good, but it wasn't all that bad either. There were some interesting things in it, but the slowness and the drama were both a little overdone.

Characters:
Told in the point of view of Anne Boleyn,  I knew that the story would have a sad ending. Spending the entire book remembering what was going to happen to her in the end was depressing. Anne had so many hopes. All she wanted was to marry for love, but with her Father's arranged marriage plans that was most likely not happening.
Anne was kind of stupid in her decisions, she was constantly doing things that if they had been in a contemporary book I probably would have written off that character right away.
Her love interests in the book are many, and because not much is known about Anne Boleyn probably not historically accurate.
I won't go into her love interests here, except to say that I didn't like any of them.

Cover:
Love the covers of these books, they are very well done!

Overall this book was alright, but not something I would recommend to Historical Fiction fans. Maybe fans of Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. I am still interested in reading Brazen by Katherine Longshore with hopes that it will be more fast paced. But I won't re-read this one.

Monday YA Author Interview With Charlotte Bennardo + Giveaway

Displaying IMG_0026.JPGWhere are you from?
I was born on Long Island, NY in Bay Shore, but moved to a tiny town called Mattituck (we were the first class to have 100 in the graduating class! But only because several juniors graduated early.).
When and why did you begin writing?
When I was six or seven or eight, we were at a drive n theater (waaaay back when). My dad told me to close the car door before someone took it off. Why would they take our door off just because I didn't close it? What he meant was that another car trying to park next to ours would run into the door and rip it off. I realized he didn't use the right words, and I was fascinated ever since.
What books have most influenced your life most?
The first book I truly loved also influenced me. It was "Beautiful Joe" by Marshall Saunders, told from the point of view of an abused dog. It showed me his life and thoughts. It touched every emotion and I always wanted to write something that affected someone as deeply as I was by that book.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a
mentor?
I'd have to say Julie Garwood, the NYT bestselling romance writer. I had problems writing dialogue- it sounded stiff and choppy. I loved her style and followed it to teach myself how to write dialogue.
What book are you reading now?
I'm in the middle of several (I always do that)- "The Flame In The Mist" by my friend Kit Grindstaff, "Spook" by Mary Roach, and "Caught" by Harlan Coben
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
So many! I have lists on my desk and in my purse (some well known to the public that I just wish I had time to read) but the one that really shook me up was Barry Lyga and his "I Hunt Killers."
Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
Fave author is Sherrilyn Kenyon. What I love about her work is that she takes a myth like Atlantis and mixes it up with Greek mythology and vampires and shape shifters--and it works. I find myself actually thinking that the world she has created could exist. And more important, I want to live there!
What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Revisions. I don't mind once or twice, but when it has to be revised several times, I get bored. I like the shiny new ideas, even with all the flaws.
Have you been an avid reader your entire life? (since you could read)

I was not much of a reader when I was young. I started kindergarten at four and wasn't quite ready. It took me years to catch up, and then I wasn't close to a library. I think I became a voracious reader when I started in seventh grade and could haunt the school library.

What character in your books do you relate to most?
Hmmmm. "Sirenz" and "Sirenz Back In Fashion" were co-written with Natalie Zaman, so the characters have a little bit of both of us. I'm like Sharrise (the character I mostly wrote) in that I'm snarky, tall, blonde, and love color. But I'm not like Sharisse because I don't do the spa-manicures-shopping obsession thing. I'm not like Meg (who Natalie mostly wrote) because I don't like old clothes or am shy, but I am like her because I am the green-recycle queen who believes in causes. I'm a bit like Hades in that I have no patience for annoying people but not like him in that I don't play with people's emotions. In the new book, "Blonde Ops," also written with Natalie, there's one major character that has a lot of both of us. Bec Jackson is like me in that she's a bit klutzy, not all of her things work out like she plans, and she has a joie de vivre; we're different in that I'm no computer whiz, and technology sometimes makes me swearing-like-a-sailor
 crazy.

Ok now some fun questions:

What is your favorite sport to watch and or play?
My favorite sport to watch is the Olympics (it has everything! But I really do detest curling). To play, I'm a swimmer. I joke with the hubs that I'd trade him in before my pool. I swim year round; home in summer, at the Y in winter.
Favorite Movie?
Oooh, toughie. So many... I'd have to say "The Lord of The Rings" because it has everything- love, war, good, evil, magic, humor, death, life, memorable characters.
Chocolate or Vanilla?
 Def chocolate!
Puppys or kittens?
Kittens! (I have 2)
Beach or Mountains?
Beach!
If you could be a color, what color would you be?
Emerald green.
Favorite Dessert?
Raspberry cheesecake.
If you could be a book character, what character would you be?
I'd love to be Marguerite D'Aubert Goudeau. (Who?) She's a college girl in Kenyon's "Unleash The Night" who falls in love with a shape shifter and after a series of near-deaths, fights, and scares, is given the gift of shape shifting to keep him company for the next several hundred years. Had a taste of regular life, then almost immortality and some cool magical gifts. Yeah, I could do that.

Sirenz (Sirenz #1)
Sirenz (Sirenz #1)

Bickering frenemies Meg and Shar are doing some serious damage at a midnight sample sale when the fashionistas find themselves arguing over a pair of shoes-with fatal consequences. One innocent bystander later, the girls are suddenly at the mercy of Hades, Lord of the Underworld himself. To make them atone for what they've done, Hades forces the teens to become special-assignment Sirens, luring to the Underworld an individual whose unholy contract is up.

Finding that delicate balance between their fashion addiction and their new part-time job in the eternal hellfire biz turns out to be harder than Meg and Shar expected, especially when an entire pantheon of Greek deities decides to get involved. Then there's the matter of the fine print in their own contracts...

Book Review: Rules Of Summer

Rules of Summer (Rules of Summer, #1)Rules Of Summer (Rules Of Summer #1)
Joanna Philbin
Published June 4th 2013 by Poppy

There are two sides to every summer.

When seventeen-year-old Rory McShane steps off the bus in East Hampton, it's as if she's entered another universe, one populated by impossibly beautiful people wearing pressed khakis and driving expensive cars. She's signed on to be a summer errand girl for the Rules -- a wealthy family with an enormous beachfront mansion. Upon arrival, she's warned by other staff members to avoid socializing with the family, but Rory soon learns that may be easier said than done.

Stifled by her friends and her family's country club scene, seventeen-year-old Isabel Rule, the youngest of the family, embarks on a breathless romance with a guy whom her parents would never approve of. It's the summer for taking chances, and Isabel is bringing Rory along for the ride. But will Rory's own summer romance jeopardize her friendship with Isabel? And, after long-hidden family secrets surface, will the Rules' picture-perfect world ever be the same?

After being on the search for a fun standalone I finally found Rules Of Summer, and remembering that I loved Joanna Philbin's Daughter's series, I eagerly picked this up.

Rory has a terrible home life, and needing a break, she asks her Aunt (who works for a very rich family) To ask them if they need an "errand girl" for the summer. Thus Rory travels to the Hamptons to spend the Summer on the beach in an incredible house.

At first Rory and (the rich family's daughter) Isabel hate each other, but their friendship grows throughout the book into a very admirable friendship.

Rory also encounters the son, Connor, who she immediately is attracted to.

I loved the character of Rory, (even though she was a bit naïve)she tried to believe the best in people, even though people have failed her in the past.
I didn't like Connor, I felt as if there was something false about him (maybe it was just me?)
Isabel's love interest throughout the book Mike, I also found something wrong with, but there was still cute romance with both couples.

The plot was a little "same ol". Rich people are pegged as snobs, rich girl attracted to wrong boy, rich parents don't like that....etc.

I did enjoy this, even though there were some problems with the characters, And the plot had some holes and was not that original.
It is still worth reading.
*Note* * This is more of a summer read*
